Seeming more like a science-fiction road trip buddy movie than an art project investigating the abandoned railways of Mexico, the SEFT-1 – or Sonda de Exploración Ferroviaria Tripulada – is a project by Ivan Puig and Andrés Padilla Domene.
Travelling across abandoned railways in a vehicle adapted to ride them, they documented the modern ruins that have sprung up through their disuse. Photographing towns left gasping for the blood their steel arteries once fed them, interviewing their occupants, reflecting on use and obsolescence.
Their voyage, both guilelessly exploratory and melancholically mournful, is captured on the this (unfortunately flash-based and clunkily skeuomorphic) website. A trajectory that reminds us of how much closer the past is getting to our present.
