The “Four Books” was conceived by Song Dynasty scholar Zhu Xi, who selected these texts, crafted a systematic curriculum, wrote or selected from existing commentaries, and then first published them as a collection in 1190. This curriculum, known as the “Four Books with Collected Commentaries,” 四書章句集注, in time replaced the “Five Classics” as the central focus of education, and established itself as the orthodox Confucian canon for six hundred years.


I would ask that people first read the Great Learning in order to establish the [Confucian Way’s] framework. Next the Analects to ground its fundamentals. Then the Mengzi to observe its development. And finally the Doctrine of the Mean to strive for the ancients’ subtly mysterious insights.

The Great Learning, in a single piece of writing, provides graded steps and an order to be followed; always to be regarded as a whole, it is easy to understand and should be looked at first. The Discussions, even though real and substantial, appear broken and scattered in its dialogue; at first look it is too difficult. The Mengzi has passages that arouse feelings and inspire development in men’s minds. The Doctrine of the Mean is also difficult to study; look at the other three books, only afterward is it appropriate to read it.

These works will be presented here in their original form, without editorial comment, translated directly from the Qing Dynasty imperial library edition of the canon. This respects the fact that the influence of the original authors' own commentary has already proven legendary—it seems unlikely that such commentary will be improved upon by our modern additions and subtractions.

Even if the sages were to return, they could not surpass his achievements. Zhu Xi brought the teachings of the ancients to a pinnacle and revived the scholarship that had been lost for thousands of years. He established definitive principles for countless generations.

In his commentary on the Great Learning, he presents a logical progression from the pursuit of knowledge to the attainment of a peaceful world, and from the cultivation of virtue to the realization of the highest good. In discussing the Doctrine of the Mean, his explanations reveal the principles of balance and moderation, and his insights into the nature of things reach depths that previous sages could not attain. In his commentaries on the Discussions and the Mengzi, he examines each passage thoroughly, revealing the inner virtues and outer kingship that lie at the heart of the Confucian Way. This understanding is critical for all people.

After the death of Yao and Shun, the principles that mark sages fell into decay. Oppressive sovereigns arose one after another, who pulled down houses to make ponds and lakes, so that the people knew not where they could rest in quiet; they threw fields out of cultivation to form gardens and parks, so that the people could not get clothes and food. Afterwards, corrupt speakings and oppressive deeds became more rife; gardens and parks, ponds and lakes, thickets and marshes became more numerous, and birds and beasts swarmed. By the time of the tyrant Zhou, the kingdom was again in a state of great confusion. Zhou Gong assisted king Wu, and destroyed Zhou. He smote Yan, and after three years put its sovereign to death. He drove Fei Lian to a corner by the sea, and slew him. The States which he extinguished amounted to fifty. He drove far away also the tigers, leopards, rhinoceroses, and elephants - and all the people was greatly delighted. It is said in the Book of History, "Great and splendid were the plans of king Wen! Greatly were they carried out by the energy of king Wu! They are for the assistance and instruction of us who are of an after day. They are all in principle correct, and deficient in nothing."

Flat Lay Photography

Tell a story


The best flat lays tell a visual story, so choose a theme, using a couple of 'star' items surrounded by a 'supporting cast' of additional elements. Go for harmonious, complementary colours, and keep things simple – less is often more. The most popular format for flat lays is square, and within that square you want to be aiming for a clean, easy-to-read composition. Whether you go for a square, portrait or landscape format, use the rule of thirds to guide you – imagine a noughts and crosses grid overlaying the image, and position the most important elements roughly where the gridlines intersect.
Create the background


Choose your flat-lay's backdrop with care. Plain white is very popular and often extremely effective, but don't be afraid to experiment with different colours and textures, such as wood, corkboard, fabric, wallpaper – whatever matches the theme of your flat lay.
Get the light right


Natural daylight gives great results and will minimise shadows, which are the bane of flat lays. Set up by a north or east-facing window for a soft, diffuse light; stronger, sunny light from south and west windows is more likely to produce shadows. Another way to avoid shadows is to position matt white or grey boards around your set-up, creating a 'closed set', while a burst of bounce flash from an accessory Speedlight angled up to the ceiling will also reduce the risk of shadows. However, sometimes shadows can add to the overall effect of your flat lay, so again, experiment to find what works best.
Three legs are better than two


To position your camera above the flat lay you'll obviously need some height. You could stand on a chair or small step-ladder and hand-hold the camera directly downwards, but a tripod will make things far easier and safer – for both you and your kit! Some tripods have a tilting centre column that enables you to position the camera vertically downwards, or you can buy an accessory side (lateral) arm that attaches to where the tripod head usually fits; you then fix the tripod head and camera to the end of the arm extending over your flat lay. You might need to hook on some counterweights to the other end of the arm to prevent the whole thing from tipping.
Depth of field


To ensure everything in your flat lay is sharply in focus from front to back you want to maximise depth of field, so select aperture priority or manual mode and choose a narrow aperture e.g. f/16. This will necessitate a longer shutter speed e.g. 1 second, which is another reason for using a tripod, as it keeps the camera rock-steady during a long exposure to ensure a crisp, sharp shot. helps. To make doubly sure of minimising camera shake, shoot with a cable release or by using the camera's self-timer.
